Caveated, that it's EARLY and this team has been hastily assembled and only known each other for a few months. But we have to be realistic: The Tennessee team made the Cardinals look like a middle school team, mere boys competing against men. Which takes us to the 5 Honest Observations

    1. This team is clearly subpar athletically. As I said in my Morehead State post, it seems only Traore has flashes of high-level athleticism. The others all are relatively similar: Smart, experienced players but who are more in the plodding category than the skywalking one. None of them can create separation or can win a play on sheer athletic talent. Rooths might have the most potential. Waterman is a terrible defender, and small quick guards will be the death of this team. It might be worth it to show some zone at times.

    2. There is no point of attack or offensive creators. This gets back to athleticism above. The guys threw it around the three-point line, but no one distinguished himself as a person who could penetrate and create shots for himself or his teammates. The one player from last year I'd love to have is Ty-Laur Johnson. With his quickness, he could have opened up a lot of opportunities for the three-point shooters. Tennessee showed how to play Louisville: Push out hard and make them take bad, late-shot clock threes. Let's be...honest...most of the offense looked a lot more like Kenny Payne-era basketball than Pitino-era.

    3. Taking threes can disease the mind. At its best, basketball is a fluid sport, where different offensive threats create more offensive opportunities elsewhere. Jacking up three after bad three does not do that. I think the team needs to get out of the "three at all costs" mindset because it becomes predictable and easier to defend. This is a coaching adjustment I expect we will see over time.

    4. Pat Kelsey's In-game coaching still a question mark. It's WAY too early to draw any judgments. I'm very excited about PK as coach. But I will put a marker down that I did not see a lot of adjustments. He should have called timeout immediately after that second turnover. The game was over in the first two minutes. Let's keep an eye on this category.

    5. There is a LOT at stake over the next two months. Should the Cards look this bad over the next two-three months, there could be severe harm done to the program. Kelsey is a master salesman (Remember, his dad owned a car dealership!) and I love his approach and effort so far, but Cards fans have had a very bad 10 years, and they will quickly find other things to do with their time and fandom. Kelsey HAS to get a few key wins over the next few months.

I won’t disagree too much with the first 3. We’re not vintage Louisville athletically or even close. Rooths and Scott definitely the best athletes. I think Chuck’s has the skills to penetrate and kick out or create some but siva he is not. All that being said if we look like a BYU type team this year our best bet may in fact be what he’s doing…. Hopefully shoot the lights out. Not my favorite idea but hopefully we get enough wins and attention that our stature as a tradition and NIL and crowds will hype enough big time recruits. Def need a couple dudes who are freak athletes

It’s too early to tell, but I’ve predicted the Kelsey tenure will be labeled as mediocre when all is said and done.

Nothing I’ve seen yet has changed my mind.

I bet Oats and Pearl both lose games this season.

The Vols knocked down shots the Cards didn't that's your ballgame. Dissect it anyway you want but it's that simple.

The beauty and downfall of message boards. All voices are welcome.

I agree actually though it is fair to be skeptical (and honestly all should be skeptical instead of “he is the guy”). He does have to “prove it”. E.g. we all were pumped at how quick he assembled a team (damn near impossible task) but at same time none of these guys were that “great”/big wins. And honestly the biggest “recruits” I feel like we lost (BHH, James, Skyy, Tre). I think those four actually are as good if not better than anyone we have right now and WITH THE RIGHT COACH, I “think” could have been a very solid nucleus to build around.

I am not ready to “critique” his coaching but am good with people being like “wait and see”

    Yep.

Fun fact: Dan Hurley is the hottest coach in college basketball right now. He went 16-17 in his first season at UCONN. Good thing they didn’t panic and fire him.

This is only the second real game this team has played. They will be better and Kelsey will be successful. Compare his post game press conference to KP’s!

Today definitely showed we don’t have great athletic talent. We look like a team full of a great role players.

We don’t have a big, physical post presence down low and we don’t have guards that can penetrate, break the D down and create their own shot (like Russ And Siva). We were clearly rattled and missed tons of open shots. TN made a ton of shots. That was going to equal a loss no matter what. To be elite again, we need at least 2 next level NBA guys. We simply just don’t have it right now.

Even still, I don’t think TN should have been 20 points better than us

Well if it hasn't been said yet, someone has to say it and I will. Let the cake bake. ( and be thankful we have about 22 - 25 games vs teams not nearly as good as Tenn )

I honestly think that our biggest problem today was that the Yum Center White Out intimidated the Cardinals more than it did the Vols. I saw a lot of deer in the headlights look from our players. I think they felt a ton of pressure to do well and it affected their performance.

Jtown I agree 100% Biggest crowd any of them have ever played in front of. For UT it was just like a Tuesday night in the SEC. And if that is indeed the case then I need to find a bigger hat to tip to those who were there. You freaked out your own team!!! YOU are back!

It’s insane to me that an SEC team coming to the Yum is no big deal. That was the laughing stock of basketball conferences my entire life. But I can’t disagree m. It looked like the environment and stage was too big for this team, which I hate to admit is a bit concerning

Good take. The problem is we might not be upper level athletically, but we also are skinny/light in the butt. So we bet pushed around by strong teams too. We are strictly finesse right now

To me, the environment felt like one of those mid-major programs who gets a once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity to have a big time team come to your place, and the lights were too bright. The fans came out of the woodwork, the in-game theatrics were at another level, excitement was at a fever pitch, and we didn’t know how to handle it and got our butts kicked. Now the crowds go back to 8,000-9,000 until the next big-time opponent comes calling.

Not with a good coach, maybe a loss but not by 40. You can question the attitude and effort or last year's players, but the talent was better. Last year's coach was not a leader of young men. Give the new staff time but I think we should have hired a big-time name to reboot this program. I don't know if there were any available after that ignorant B*****D ruined the brand. Having said that, I'm willing to ride with the new guy for now.

Kelsey has won everywhere hes been, he assembled this roster in a few months. Probably not a great idea to play a top level team the 2nd game of his tenure. A little pre-mature to throw in the towel on this guy. Payne got 2 years and him and his minions were clamoring for a 3rd.
